Blackmail Or War, Genevieve Tabouis – A Penguin Special (S3). Published by Penguin, 1938. Third Printing. Paperback. In very good condition given its age: no marks or tears; pages all firmly attached. There is a 3cm separation to lower front cover spine without loss of paper. Pages are browned but quite legible, top right edge pages 49 to 66 have a slightly shortened printing cutline not affecting text block. Genevieve Tabouis was the diplomatic editor of the French newspaper ‘OEuvre’ and sets out what she considers the real basis of the present trends in the political game providing her observations along with over 40 caricatures (“by Joss”) of the European political players in the build up to WWII. Penquin’s Special Series on contemporary political and social issues began with ‘Germany Puts the Clock Back’ by Edgar Mowrer issued in November 1937. The initial print run of 50,000 books sold out in 4 days. This series achieved very large sales figures, and since Penguin’s war-time paper rationing was based on pre-war usage, this greatly helped to sustain Penguin Books during the period of the Second World War. A total of 145 Specials were produced during the war until the end of 1945. This Copy of Penguin Special S3 is the Third Printing March 1938; The first two printings were in February. 001412 $20
