British Mammals, Archibald Thorburn, Longman, Green, and Co, London, 1920. Volume I published 1920, (viii), 84pp; Volume II published 1921, (viii), 108pp.  4to up to 12″ tall with pen and ink sketches in text and 50 colour plates with tissue guards.  Red cloth boards with gilt border, gilt spine titles with tiny gilt flower; top edge gilt. Thick art paper for text with plates on cards; hinges are heavy cloth allowing for plates to lay flat. Light fading and wear to boards; initialed pencil note to endpaper of both volumes noting “collated September ‘57″; short closed tear at inner margin of tissue guard Vol 2 frontispiece. Binding is firm and contents clean and vibrant.  A beautiful set.

Archibald Thorburn (1860 – 1935) was a Scottish artist and animal painter and bird illustrator “destined to become Britain’s, and some would say the world’s, greatest wildlife artist of all time”.  003238   $400
