From The Kirkus Review: “Much of the information on the American political system contained herein — presented in the form of lessons complete with review questions — approximates the sort of common causality you might find in any standard Power-to-the-People handbook (straight talk on how Congress operates, the nature of political parties, campaign costs), but throughout it’s revved up with choice Gregorian gassers, e.g., “”‘Reagan’ pronounced backwards is ‘nigger'”” and if Ronnie ever becomes president, “”Then we could say we have a backward nigger in the White House.”” Gregory also provides some atypical comparisons re the Hueys (Long and Newton) and numerological parallels between the lives and deaths of Lincoln and Kennedy (both men elected to Congress in ’47, both competed unsuccessfully for the vice-presidential nomination in ’56, both elected president in ’60, both alleged assassins’ names contained 15 letters, etc.). There’s a glossary too — definition of FBI is “”originally formed to provide a lifetime job for Director J. Edgar Hoover.”” Look for a sizable enrollment in Professor Gregory’s course on the politics of phooey.” 000581 $15
