Natural History Picture Book of Reptiles, Fish, and Insects. By the Rev. JG Wood. With 240 Illustrations by Wolf, Zwecker, Coleman etc., engraved by the Dalziel Brothers. Published by George Routledge and Sons, London, New York, 1879. 8vo up to 9½” tall., 248 pp. Elaborately embossed red boards with gilt titles front and spine and tipped in oval full color portrait of a girl with a worm or centipede on her finger. In very good condition with moderate wear to boards and some foxing marks and thumb prints to pages at margins. Paper at hinge line between front free endpaper and pastedown is split; binding still tight and there are no loose pages. The majority of the woodcut illustrations are in fine condition.
Title as it appears on title page is: “Routledge’s Picture Book of Fishes, Insects Etc.”. No copy or reference for this abbreviated title is found. The remainder of title page, preface, index and text parallels an early undated Routledge edition with full title. John George Wood, or Rev J. G. Wood, (1827–1889), was a prolific and successful natural history writer; his several books were often revised, supplemented, reprinted, and apparently, renamed. While this book was intended for a juvenile audience, it is very detailed offering scientific information and field observation. This is the third Natural History Picture Book by Wood following one on animals and one on birds.
