October Ferry To Gabriola is not a completed novel. According to Margerie Lowry, the author’s widow, this published version is her “sorting out” of numerous drafts of chapters, paragraphs and even sentences that Lowry began to write in 1946. It is a story of an existential quest featuring a Lowry-like character, Ethan Lleweyllen, and his wife, in their never-fully-consummated journey to Gabriola Island off the east coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia. Malcolm Lowry (1909-57) was an English poet and novelist who lived for several years in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. 002694 $30
