The New Normal Mental Arithmetic: A Thorough And Complete Course, By Analysis And Induction. Brooks, Edward. Published by Sower, Potts & Co., Philadelphia, 1873. 16mo up to 6½” tall. 176 pages; advertisements front and back endpapers. Brown cloth boards with ruled black decorative border and illustrated blind stamped titles. Contains eight sections with lessons on fundamental operations, fractions, denominate numbers, proportion, percentage, story problems and advanced course. This book once belonged to Alice Parrott whose penciled cursive reads: “Steal not this book/For fear of your life/For the owner carries/A long jack knife”. Lucy Parrot (assumed sister to Alice), has written her name at top of front and back endpapers. Another student has penciled instructions to return the book although her spelling and handwriting is challenging to decipher. Hinge line exposed pages 128/129, a few light pencil marks, otherwise text is fine. Boards have rubbing to edges and along spine. It is likely this copy was used in Cole Grammar School (1885-1926), in West Oakland whose alumni include Jack London.          002226         $40
