Plum cloth boards with gilt spine titles. Volume is in fine, unread condition; unclipped dustjacket has inside tape repairs and light scuffing.

Dr. Helmcken was in the employ of the Hudson’s Bay Company as surgeon for the whole of Vancouver Island. Arriving in Victoria in 1850, he married a daughter of Governor James Douglas, and became politically involved and was elected to the first Legislative Assembly. He was also among the delegation negotiating Union with Canada.
