Fairy Tales from the Far East: Adapted from the Birth Stories of Buddha, Gift, Theo (Dorothy Boulger). Published by Lawrence & Bullen, London, 1892. Second edition printed in the same year as the first edition. — preface. 8vo up to 9½” tall. 200pp. with full-page black and white illustrations by O. Von Glehn. Light brown cloth boards with silver gilt illustrations and titles. Small inscription dated 1900 to free endpaper, foxing to endpapers, very light toning; contents are otherwise clean and without tears or marks. Hinges weakened with webbing exposed between front pastedown and free endpaper; inner signatures weakened although all pages remain secure. Boards have moderate wear with a few water marks to front board and rippling to rear board. A very scarce early copy of this well known work.

Contains 8 stories adapted for children from works translated by Professor Rhys Davids (1843-1922). Rhys Davids was a British Indologist, Pāli and Buddhist scholar and provided one of the first English translations of early Buddhist texts. Dorothy Boulger (pseudonym: Theo Gift), was a Victorian novelist, who wrote fifteen novels and numerous magazine novellas between 1874 and 1901.
