Small oblong 8vo up to 9½” tall., 161pp. of captioned, sepia photographs. Pebbled dark navy boards with gilt titles to front, string tied; flower patterned pastedowns. Former owner’s name, date of 1911 and place of San Fransico to front and rear pastedown. Pages numbered by owner. Boards have edge rubbing and are otherwise in very good condition. Contents are in generally fine condition; one page with small corner tear outside of image block; a couple of thumb marks.
Photographs show people, events, and views of U.S. Army units, American transport ships, Igorot and Moro warriors, women, and children, portraits of royalty, military leaders, dancers, etc. Several of the photos document horrific events including executions, beheadings and battlefield human carnage. An important historical photo collection.
James David Givens (1863-1939) was a photographer based at the Presidio of San Francisco, California. The album contains the photos he took while following a troop of American soldiers in war time in the Philippines, by way of Hawaii, China and Japan.
