Willoughby Verner, a British military officer, was part of the military expedition (1884-1885) to the relief of Khartoum. En route under difficult circumstances, Verner made drawings in his sketch book, which were later made into color lithographs, thirty-nine of which are in this book. Some are serene desert landscape; others are of warfare.
