Very light wear to card covers; light page toning otherwise in unread condition. Portions of this book first appeared in the “New Yorker¿ and then published fully in the USA in 1959. This is the first Canadian edition of Gallant’s novel. The novel is played in four parts dealing with the nervous breakdown of an American girl in Europe. An expatriate, like so many of her characters, Mavis Gallant (1922-2014) left her native Canada for Europe in 1951. There she wrote stories about rootless and possibility with more than 100 of them appearing in The New Yorker.
