Peter Simon Pallas (1741-1811) was a German naturalist and explorer, was offered the opportunity by the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences to lead one of the major scientific expeditions sent, at the initiative of Catherine II, to explore the Russian Empire, many parts of which were still poorly understood. This atlas summarizes Pallas’s discoveries in southern Russia. All of his travels throughout the vast Russian Empire advanced science in many fields (paleontology, geography, geology, ethnography and linguistics).
