Made up Words and Happy New Year January 1, 2018 – Posted in: Blog – Tags: Made up Words
Clearly, this page has been long neglected, ignored and avoided. I like writing – I made my living for many years researching, composing and crafting thousands of pages on social and justice issues. But, a blog implies a kind of commitment that the writer has something profound or at least useful to offer. I am not that presumptuous. Also, blog rhymes with slog and it reminds me of deadlines. According to the Oxford dictionary, the word Blog is an abbreviation of ‘weblog’ first used in the 1990’s. How boring. As a collector of dictionaries who spends hours happily lost in etymological history, this disappoints. So, let me introduce you to another made up word which I do love:
- the strange wistfulness of used bookstores, which are somehow infused with the passage of time—filled with thousands of old books you’ll never have time to read, each of which is itself locked in its own era, bound and dated and papered over like an old room the author abandoned years ago, a hidden annex littered with thoughts left just as they were on the day they were captured.
