Light brown cloth boards with silver gilt illustrations and titles. Small inscription dated 1900 to free endpaper, foxing to endpapers, very light toning; contents are otherwise clean and without tears or marks. Hinges weakened with webbing exposed between front pastedown and free endpaper; inner signatures weakened although all pages remain secure. Boards have moderate wear with a few water marks to front board and rippling to rear board. A very scarce early copy of this well known work.
Contains 8 stories adapted for children from works translated by Professor Rhys Davids (1843-1922). Rhys Davids was a British Indologist, Pāli and Buddhist scholar and provided one of the first English translations of early Buddhist texts. Dorothy Boulger (pseudonym: Theo Gift), was a Victorian novelist, who wrote fifteen novels and numerous magazine novellas between 1874 and 1901.
