The author and Burgess knew each other in the 1940’s; in August of 1956, Driberg traveled to Moscow to interview Burgess in person. At the time of its publication, the book and Driberg received some attention; some thought the book too sympathetic to Burgess and or vetted by the KGB; others thought it was a M15 plot to trap Burgess.
